Biography
Australia's Gold Class deliver a raw strain of post-punk shaped by the influence of Gang of Four, Fugazi, and fellow countrymen Radio Birdman. Guitarist Evan James Purdey, vocalist Adam Curley, bassist Jon Shub, and drummer Mark Hewitt make up the lineup. The quartet came together in 2014 after creative writing student Purdey recruited classmates Curley and Hewitt to expand on solo demos he had already cut. Shortly thereafter the group brought in Shub, a luthier who shared bar shifts with Purdey and Curley, and began performing live by mid-year. In September the band issued its first single, Michael, highlighting the tension between Purdey's ferocious guitar lines and Curley's crooning vocals. Early in 2015 the musicians tracked their debut album at Melbourne's Head Gap studio with producer Simon Grounds. Issued that September on Spunk Records and Felte, the record was titled It's You. The band followed with the fiery single "Twist in the Dark" in 2017, setting the stage for its second album, Drum. Co-produced by the Drones' Gareth Liddiard and driven by an interest in society's misfits, the album appeared in August of that year.
