Sydney, Australia-based quartet Straight Arrows came together in 2007 after frontman Owen Penglis, having been ejected from multiple prior groups, began capturing his own songs on a four-track recorder. Drummer Adam Williams, bassist Angela Garrick, and guitarist Alex Grigg soon completed the lineup, and the group issued its debut 7", Can't Count, that same year on the self-run Juvenile Records imprint, thereby establishing the "mid-fi" strain of psychedelic garage punk that Penglis himself named. The following year saw the release of a split single alongside French garage punk outfit the Creteens, after which touring commitments occupied the band until 2010, when sessions for the debut album It's Happening took place first at Penglis' home studio and later at a Kings Cross facility in Sydney once neighbors lodged complaints. Following the album's appearance, further singles surfaced in 2012 with All the Time and in 2013 with Never Enough, yet the next full-length, Rising, did not arrive until 2014, a period during which Penglis also produced recordings for Palms, the Frowning Clouds, and Royal Headache while assembling the Nuggets tribute album Nuggets: Antipodean Interpolations of the First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968.
