Biography
Sam Blasucci maintains his base in Los Angeles, where he first gained notice through the roots-oriented folk-rock partnership Mapache and later through solo releases that lean on piano and draw from 1960s and 1970s pop traditions. During the final years of the 2010s he and singer-guitarist Clay Finch cultivated an audience with their tightly woven vocal lines and melodic, country-tinged compositions that carried a clear West Coast imprint. The year 2023 brought both the duo’s fifth full-length, Swinging Stars, and Blasucci’s initial solo outing, Off My Stars. Prompted by the arrival of a piano and a period spent in New Orleans, that debut record adopted a more reflective stance lyrically while exploring an eclectic range of instruments that touched on pop and the classic singer-songwriter mode of the 1970s. Twelve months afterward came his second solo album, Real Life Thing, issued alongside a thematically linked concert film.
Blasucci grew up in La Cañada Flintridge within Los Angeles County and first picked up guitar under the guidance of his father, himself a working musician. At La Cañada High School he and future Mapache partner Finch discovered a mutual enthusiasm for bluegrass along with the Band, the Grateful Dead, and Neil Young. Following graduation the pair went separate ways; Blasucci traveled to Mexico on a mission trip before returning to the Los Angeles area. They later reunited in a Grateful Dead tribute ensemble and, in 2016, formed Mapache as a duo. Their fluid harmonies and interlocking guitar parts meshed readily with the country shading of their material, allowing them to attract listeners quickly. The self-titled Mapache debut appeared in 2017, after which the Yep Roc label released From Liberty Street in 2020.
When the COVID-19 pandemic curtailed live performance, Blasucci spent part of the ensuing lockdown in New Orleans, where the city’s rich musical legacy continued to spark ideas even though most venues remained shuttered. Although Mapache reconvened for the 2022 album Roscoe’s Dream, Blasucci had already started composing material that sat outside the band’s usual scope. Finch’s mother had passed along an older piano that, with assistance from Beachwood Sparks’ Farmer Dave Scher and several other friends, was relocated to Blasucci’s Ojai apartment and soon became his principal writing tool for the forthcoming solo project. Working with producer Johnny Payne of the Shilohs, he tracked Off My Stars for Innovative Leisure Records and Calico Discos; the 2023 release moved into fresh terrain through its autobiographical focus and a sonic approach shaped by jazz standards, soft rock, and pop. Swinging Stars arrived from Mapache only weeks later.
Blasucci’s next solo effort proved more expansive, pairing the album with a concert film he directed himself. Shot and produced by Bryce Makela at Carbonite Sound in Ojai, the film incorporated stagehands and deliberate set transitions to mirror the record’s changing emotional landscape. Real Life Thing reached stores in November 2024 on Innovative Leisure and Calico Discos; like its predecessor, it was cut at Carbonite Sound and co-produced by Blasucci and Payne. The songs examine questions of mortality and existence, drawing some of their lines from the songwriter’s first published poetry collection, Guidelines for Dying.
