Sam Burton, the singer and songwriter, built a following in the D.I.Y. cassette underground during the second half of the 2010s with his wandering, somber songwriting, which eventually secured a release through the respected West Coast independent Tompkins Square and its 2020 full-length I Can Go with You. He also joined forces with Ben Schwab and Marina Allen in the retro-leaning folk-rock trio Sylvie, whose first recordings appeared in 2021. Moving to the Partisan roster, Burton returned to solo work in 2023 with the expansive, string-rich album Dear Departed.

Born in Salt Lake City, Burton secretly learned guitar during his teenage years by borrowing his stepfather’s instrument without permission. Drawing from the Beach Boys and Velvet Underground, he performed in a shoegaze group before settling in Los Angeles, where he shifted toward an acoustic folk style enriched by ambient and occasionally psychedelic elements alongside confessional lyrics. His homemade recordings on the Chthonic label, noted for their evocative and haunting quality, circulated widely in the cassette scene and attracted attention from select influential blogs. Tompkins Square, the San Francisco imprint, followed the signing with two limited-edition 7" singles before issuing the debut album I Can Go with You in late 2020, produced by Jarvis Taveniere of Real Estate and Purple Mountains.

Instead of immediately pursuing further solo material, Burton next collaborated with fellow songwriters Ben Schwab of Golden Daze and Marina Allen in a project they called Sylvie, after the Iain Matthews Fairport Convention song they also cover. The group delivered its self-titled debut in 2021 together with several warmly recorded folk-rock singles. Burton maintained an active solo presence, including tours alongside Loving and Jose Gonzalez, before aligning with the eclectic folk label Partisan Records for his second album. Produced by Jonathan Wilson of Father John Misty and Margo Price, Dear Departed appeared in 2023 and extended the vintage-leaning sound of the debut while addressing themes of pain and loss in its lyrics.
