Sam Levine

Having spent his formative years amid the American Midwest throughout the 1950s, accomplished jazz performer and studio musician Sam Levine went on to study at Harvard College, the University of Alaska, and Indiana University, ultimately earning a degree covering applied music, music history, and theory. His arrival in Nashville during the mid-1970s quickly established him as a highly adaptable session player and sideman whose instrumental range encompassed saxophone, flute, clarinet, and penny whistle, leading to collaborations with figures such as Amy Grant, Wynonna, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Vince Gill, Mel Tormé, Al Jarreau, Reba McEntire, and countless others. Leading ensembles devoted to both traditional and contemporary jazz as well as Celtic and Dixieland repertoires, he maintained an active schedule that encompassed wedding ceremonies, corporate functions, and additional studio dates. From the early 1990s onward he began issuing his own recordings, which consisted chiefly of instrumental collections rendered in a smooth jazz idiom along with praise-and-worship material. Entering the new millennium, Levine discovered fresh opportunities for his catalog amid surging demand for tranquil instrumental fare on streaming platforms, an avenue that produced nearly forty albums by 2024, excluding numerous compilation appearances.
