Samantha Crain crafts songs that draw from multiple folk traditions while incorporating elements of modern indie music. Her Native American background informs a powerful vocal delivery marked by an expressive tremble that heightens the emotional resonance of her introspective, personally rooted lyrics, which pair reflective self-examination with sharp observations of the surrounding world. Early releases such as the 2009 album Songs in the Night and the 2015 effort Under Branch & Thorn & Tree kept her sound rooted in folk yet open to fresh acoustic and Americana directions, whereas the 2017 album You Had Me at Goodbye represented a decisive, energetic turn toward indie rock that cast her familiar themes in a more luminous light.

Raised in the isolated town of rural Shawnee, Oklahoma, Crain developed a distinctive, grounded approach to folk that reflected her surroundings. Though her father's record collection, featuring Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead, provided initial inspiration, she found deeper connection in Oklahoma's own musical legacy, spanning Woody Guthrie's roots-oriented Americana and the experimental impulses of the Flaming Lips. She attended Oklahoma Baptist University, completing several semesters in English Literature before joining a semester-long songwriting program on Martha's Vineyard that honed her skill for narrative-driven composition. Returning home burdened by student debt, she opted to chase a music career instead, prompting Ramseur Records to sign her after noticing her extensive touring schedule with guitar in hand.

Her Ramseur debut arrived in 2007 as the mature EP The Confiscation, which showcased harmonica, tambourine, lap steel guitar, and her straightforward vocals. The following year brought her first full-length, Songs in the Night, credited to Samantha Crain & the Midnight Shivers. The 2011 sophomore album You (Understood) preceded the 2013 release Kid Face, a raw and autobiographical work produced by indie rocker John Vanderslice that earned broad critical acclaim. Issued on the Full Time Hobby label in 2015, Under Branch & Thorn & Tree again featured Vanderslice, who introduced strings and synthetic textures as Crain addressed working-class struggles and the socio-politically marginalized on tracks such as "The 99 Percent." Crain composed her fifth album over four months in Norman, Oklahoma while employed at a local pizza restaurant, then traveled to Oakland, California's Tiny Telephone studios with Vanderslice to record; the resulting You Had Me at Goodbye appeared in early 2017. Health complications emerged by year's end when tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, and injuries from a car accident prevented her from playing guitar, plunging her into despair until physical therapy and counseling restored her capacity and creative drive, culminating in the July 2020 release A Small Death.
