Biography
Known for her warm, wispy vocal style, Jenny O. excels at crafting catchy indie pop and rock tracks that carry a retro sensibility. Early placements in television quickly followed the arrival of her debut EP Home in 2010, and by the time Peace & Information appeared in 2017 she had already supplied backing vocals for Father John Misty, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Richard Edwards, among others, while maintaining an active solo touring schedule and securing additional sync licensing opportunities. In subsequent studio sessions she blended bittersweet indie pop with vintage rock textures and occasional light synth pop accents across New Truth in 2020 and Spectra in 2023.
A native of Long Island, Jennifer Anne Ognibene pursued jazz studies at SUNY New Paltz and composition coursework at Purchase College prior to relocating to the West Coast. There she became a member of the short-lived Los Angeles Ladies Choir, an ensemble that also included participants from Warpaint, Pocahaunted, and Lavender Diamond. The group issued the EP Sing Joyfully on Teenage Teardrops in 2010. That same year Ognibene, performing under the name Jenny O., released the solo demo collection Home, two of whose songs were placed in prominent automobile television campaigns while “Well OK Honey” featured in an episode of HBO’s True Blood and additional placements followed.
She contributed backing vocals to Father John Misty’s 2012 album Fear Fun, and the next year issued her full-length debut Automechanic on Holy Trinity Records. Produced by singer/songwriter Jonathan Wilson, the record prompted a live appearance with her band on Last Call with Carson Daly. In 2014 she performed the theme song for the ABC/Hulu series Selfie and also added vocals to Jonathan Wilson’s 2013 release Fanfare. During this period she further collaborated with Will Oldham on Bonnie “Prince” Billy projects.
The EP Work arrived in 2016, after which additional tracks found their way into video games and series such as Orange Is the New Black. Her voice appeared on Lemon Cotton Candy Sunset, the debut solo album by Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s Richard Edwards, released in March 2017. With Wilson again at the helm, her second album Peace & Information came out on Holy Trinity that August; several songs later surfaced in episodes of Showtime’s Shameless and the CW’s Riverdale. The following year she guested on Ingrid Michaelson’s Songs for the Season, and throughout the latter half of the 2010s she toured in support of acts including the Proclaimers, Dar Williams, and Tegan and Sara.
After signing with Mama Bird Recording Co., Jenny O. issued her third full-length New Truth in 2020, produced by Kevin Ratterman (Elliott, Your Black Star). Ratterman returned to handle production, engineering, mixing, and mastering duties on Spectra, which was released on Mama Bird Recording Co. in February 2023.
