Biography
German musician Dirk Dresselhaus operates under the Schneider TM moniker, deploying an extensive range of acoustic and electronic tools to shape distorted electro pop alongside unstructured improvisations. Following his initial full-length outing via the rhythm-focused instrumental set Moist in 1998, the cult appeal of his glitch-pop rendition of the Smiths' "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" (credited with Kpt.Michi.Gan and first issued in 2000) contributed to the emergence of the indie electronic style. He persisted with eccentric avant-pop efforts such as 2002's Zoomer before shifting toward improvisational works including 2012's Construction Sounds and various scores for cinema and stage productions. The 8 of Space in 2021 signaled Schneider TM's reentry into experimental electronic pop, whereas 2023's Ereignishorizont presented a broader collection of post-minimalist noise-drone.
Prior to issuing solo recordings from the mid-'90s onward, Dresselhaus performed with multiple German indie rock groups such as Hip Young Things and Locust Fudge. After launching the Schneider TM identity via a self-titled 1997 EP, he gained visibility through Moist, a 1998 City Slang album that appeared in the United States on Mute the subsequent year. He issued the collaborative Binokular EP with Kpt.Michi.Gan in 2000, spotlighting the Smiths cover "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out" under the title "The Light 3000." Dresselhaus followed two years later with his second album, the more voice-oriented Zoomer, again via City Slang alongside Mute. The 2004 stopgap compilation Reconfigures preceded 2006's Skoda Mluvit, after which a split single with Lustfaust surfaced in 2007 and further joint efforts with Station 17 arrived the next year.
Dresselhaus maintained activity through ventures like his partnership Angel with ex-Pan Sonic member Ilpo Väisänen, plus associations with Jochen Arbeit of Einstürzende Neubauten, Damo Suzuki, and Japanese dancer Tomoko Nakasato. He also provided scores for the films 66/67 and Polnische Ostern while creating music for theatrical works and radio dramas. Returning to the Schneider TM name, Dresselhaus released 2012's Construction Sounds, merging field recordings with electronic improvisations drawn from building activity near his East Berlin residence. A comparable improvisatory method informed the subsequent year's Guitar Sounds, incorporating several pieces originally written for Carsten Ludwig's film In der Überzahl. In 2016 he joined Arbeit and Krautrock figure Günter Schickert for the album ASS, and he contributed a volume to Bureau B's Con-Struct series utilizing archival tapes from the late Conrad Schnitzler. His soundtrack for Remainder appeared in 2018, followed by the 2019 improvisational album RA with Arbeit.
Schneider TM reemerged on Editions Mego in 2021 via The 8 of Space, marking the project's initial pop-oriented album after a 15-year interval. The more abrasive 80-minute experimental release Ereignishorizont came out on Karlrecords in 2023.
