Uwe Zahn, operating out of Berlin, issued his earliest material under the Arovane name through an EP on Din, the imprint run by Torsten Pröfrock that had previously launched Stefan Betke’s initial Pole recordings as a German dub minimalist. Those first Arovane pieces recalled the inward-facing melodic electro of early Autechre, pairing intricate, sharply syncopated machine rhythms with soft, luminous synth layers that suggested a hazy, backward-glancing atmosphere offset by rhythmic edge. Where Autechre’s Amber served as a reference point for many laptop-based producers whose efforts seldom moved beyond homage, Zahn’s output under Arovane genuinely extended an unfinished aesthetic and ranked among the most distinctive and fully realized work in that vein. Two further Din EPs, Icol Diston and AMX, followed the debut release before Arovane’s first full-length, Atol Scrap, appeared. Tides arrived on City Centre Offices later the same year. Following a joint project with Phonem and a collection of 12-inch tracks, Zahn returned to City Centre Offices for the 2004 album Lilies. After nearly a decade of inactivity, he revived the Arovane project with a series of new recordings that developed his established approach, including full-length collaborations with Hior Chronik and Porya Hatami plus additional solo albums and EPs issued on n5MD, Éter Editions, and Echocord.
