Kiln originated in Michigan as an instrumental collective, first assembling in 1993 under the name Fibreforms. Within experimental music and sound art the group has cultivated an elusive profile, releasing minimal biographical details, avoiding concerts, and participating in only occasional interviews. Its lineup comprises the multi-instrumentalists Kevin Hayes, Kirk Marrison, and Clark Rehberg III. Fibreforms issued their first recording, Treedrums, in 1996—a spatial, atmospheric collection of processed guitars, layered textures, and live percussion that established the ensemble’s foundational approach. After issuing numerous works on small independent labels, the trio adopted the name Kiln in 1998 and later aligned with Ghostly International, which presented the Sunbox mini-album in 2004. Two years afterward they self-released a compilation of unreleased and rare material; Ghostly followed with the full-length Dusker in 2007, highlighting an expanding electro-organic aesthetic the band continued to refine on the 2013 album Meadow:Watt.
