Jonas Munk, based in Odense, Denmark, produces at the intersection of glitch and ambient pop, channeling his command of piano, bass, and guitar—acquired during his early teens—into layered environments built from programmed rhythms, crackles, and creakings. He introduced himself as Manual with a favorably received self-titled 12" issued by Hobby Industries. Morr Music, the German label, followed with the full-length Until Tomorrow near the close of 2001. One of Munk’s central influences, late-period Talk Talk, shares space with Boards of Canada; the album’s strongest passages reach an uncommon sparseness in which apparently scattered components lock into seamless alignment. Its successor, Ascend, arrived a year afterward and matched that standard of quality.
