Scott Grooves emerged as another rising figure among the soulful Detroit techno artists who blend house elements into their sound. He contributed keyboards to Kevin Saunderson's Inner City before launching his own productions, which appeared as singles and an LP on Soma Records. During his upbringing, Grooves' father, a jazz musician, encouraged him to take up drums, keyboards, and guitar. Although he kept emphasizing his instrumental skills, his experiences with Inner City and at Record Time, Detroit's leading techno outlet, shifted his focus from jazz toward techno. Scotland's Soma Records issued his first single, "A New Day," in 1997, and the next year saw the arrival of his debut full-length album, Pieces of a Dream.
