Toronto native Sebastien Grainger served as the drum-playing vocalist for Death from Above 1979 prior to starting his solo career in 2008. The group’s sweaty mix of punk, hip-hop, and dance appeared across two albums, one a remix record, until Grainger parted ways with bandmate Jesse F. Keeler in 2006. Keeler subsequently launched MSTRKRFT, while Grainger pursued multiple new ventures, beginning with dance singles issued under the alias The Rhythm Method. He later secured a solo deal with Saddle Creek Records. His debut album under that arrangement, the eclectic Sebastien Grainger & the Mountains, arrived in October 2008 after Grainger handled most of the recording himself. For the accompanying tour, he recruited bassist Nick Sewell, drummer Leon Taheny, and guitarist Andrew Scott. In 2010 Grainger formed the electronic band Bad †i†s alongside ex-Tangiers member Josh Reichmann; the project issued the single “Garbage Night” that year before adopting the name Deserts. Early in 2011 he and Keeler reunited Death from Above 1979, resuming live dates and composing fresh material that received its first public performances during a brief Canadian tour in fall 2012. While those activities continued, Grainger revived his solo output via Last Gang Records, releasing Yours to Discover in November 2013.
