British-Nigerian composer Segun Akinola has supplied original music to an array of prominent BBC productions, most notably providing the score for Doctor Who when Jodie Whittaker took the lead role in 2018. From childhood he nurtured parallel passions for music and cinema, mastering both piano and drums before discovering a path that let him fuse the two. After training at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and completing an MA in Composing for Film and Television at the National Film and Television School, he began attracting attention through his work on short films and documentaries. The year 2016 brought his first major BBC commission, Black and British: A Forgotten History, as well as his debut feature, Shola Amoo’s A Moving Image. In 2017 BAFTA named him among its Breakthrough Brits; he also extended his BBC collaborations with scores for Expedition Volcano and The Human Body: Secrets of Your Life. Additional short-film and television projects occupied the following twelve months until the BBC selected his modern orchestral approach for the 2018 Doctor Who series. In 2019 Akinola reunited with Amoo on the director’s second feature, The Last Tree.
