New Zealand native Bevan Smith, working under the Signer moniker, crafts productions that link the electronics-saturated early post-rock of Seefeel to the dub-soaked ambient techno associated with Basic Channel and Wolfgang Voigt’s projects Gas and Mint. Before turning to electronic music, Smith performed in multiple rock groups. In the late ‘90s he launched the Involve label to assemble a roster fusing indie rock with electronics, beginning the catalog with a 1998 release under his Aspen alias. He later adopted the Signer name and introduced it with the 2000 album Album. The follow-up, Low Light Dreams, reached the United States in 2002 via Manhattan’s Carpark imprint. The New Face of Smiling appeared in 2004.
