Emerging toward the close of the 1990s, Silence 4 rose among Portugal’s leading rock acts and cleared a path for subsequent English-language groups from the same scene. By setting aside the prevailing local custom of Portuguese lyrics in rock music and favoring largely acoustic songwriting instead, the quartet swiftly built a devoted audience. David Fonseca and Tozé Pedrosa first assembled the project in 1995 within Leiria, a central-northern Portuguese city; the lineup reached completion a year later when Sofia Lisboa joined on vocals and Rui Costa was added on bass. After overcoming repeated technical setbacks, the musicians produced a demo that they submitted to Polygram’s Portuguese division. Their initial appearance came on the domestic compilation Sons de Todas as Cores, where they contributed a cover of Erasure’s “A Little Respect.” Three years after forming, the band released its debut album, Silence Becomes It. Reviewers across the board hailed the record as one of Portugal’s strongest rock efforts, while listeners responded with immediate enthusiasm; sales proved strong enough for the album to hold the top spot on Portuguese charts for several months. Silence 4 then embarked on an extensive national tour and returned in 2000 with the follow-up Only Pain Is Real, further confirming the group’s stature among the country’s premier rock acts.
