Biography
Simone White crafts atmospheric songs that shift between playful energy, soulful depth, and intimate revelation. Her melodies weave together folk, pop, blues, jazz, and electronic elements, relying on dynamic contrasts where her understated vocal approach draws strength from restrained, nearly whispered phrasing. Early releases such as the 2007 album I Am the Man and the 2009 album Yakiimo centered on voice and acoustic guitar, with understated instrumental touches adding subtle hues to the material. Later singles including the 2018 track "Tiny Drop" along with the 2019 pieces "Don't Turn Your Back on Love" and "The Beep Beep Song" introduced electronic textures and pop-focused production while retaining the close, personal character of her delivery. On the 2018 album Genuine Fake she returned to a purely acoustic setting, presenting reinterpreted versions of earlier material stripped down to guitar and voice alone.
White entered the world in Hawaii, where she was raised amid artistic surroundings and spent years traveling while developing her guitar playing and songwriting. She eventually settled in New York City, where she began performing and documenting her compositions. By 2004 she had completed and issued her debut, The Sincere Recording Co. Presents Simone White, on her own. Admiration for Bonnie "Prince" Billy’s album Master and Everyone prompted her to seek a comparable recording approach. A mutual acquaintance connected her with producer Mark Nevers, whose prior credits include work with Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Calexico, Lambchop, and the Silver Jews. Nevers oversaw the sessions for I Am the Man, after which he forwarded the results to contacts at Honest Jon’s Record Company, the British imprint associated with Damon Albarn of Blur and Gorillaz. The album thereby became her first release on that label.
Critics responded warmly, particularly in the United Kingdom, and the track "The Beep Beep Song" appeared in a prominent Audi television advertisement. Yakiimo, her third album, contained another song licensed for a high-profile commercial, this time promoting women’s watches alongside actress Nicole Kidman. For her fourth project White pursued electronic interests by collaborating with Samuel Bing and Julian Wass of Fol Chen, yielding the 2012 album Silver Silver. She had already contributed guest vocals to the group’s 2010 release Part II: The New December. Also in 2012 she supplied backing vocals for Andrew Bird’s albums Break It Yourself and Hand of Glory. A 2015 EP titled Three Versions resulted from her partnership with German electronic artist Kassem Mosse. Live appearances expanded as she supported performers such as Andrew Bird, Little Dragon, Mark Eitzel, Nouvelle Vague, and Victoria Williams.
Following her departure from Honest Jon’s Record Company, White assumed independent control of her output in partnership with Fetch Happened Records. Genuine Fake appeared in 2018 as a collection of early songs newly recorded with minimal guitar-and-voice arrangements. Fresh material followed on the 2020 album Letter to the Last Generation. In 2021 two limited-edition lathe-cut singles emerged on the Brooklyn label Leesta Vall Sound Recordings. The short-run vinyl album Dream Comfort Memory was issued by Fetch Happened in 2022, the same year that saw a digital reissue of Genuine Fake.
