Sir Shina Peters

During 1989, Nigeria fell under the spell of "Shinamania," prompting young listeners to line up for copies of "Sir" Shina Peters' debut album Afro-Juju Series 1. The record combined juju, Afro-Beat, and driving Fuji percussion into a single high-voltage sound that quickly won over buyers. Recognition followed in the shape of a Juju Musician of the Year title, a newly filmed video, and a series of concerts across the States. Although the successor album introduced synthesizers alongside Fuji drumming, it met strong disapproval at home and "Shinamania" soon faded.
