Biography
Skyway Man serves as the creative vehicle for James Wallace, a multifaceted singer, songwriter, and producer who also fronts the Nashville-based folk-rock group James Wallace & the Naked Light. Wallace channels an off-kilter fusion of cosmic country, dusty boogie rock, gospel-folk, and blues across his Skyway Man releases, beginning with the 2017 debut Seen Comin' from a Mighty Eye, continuing through the expansive 2020 psych-folk opera World Only Ends When You Die, and extending to the introspective 2023 concept album Flight of the Long Distance Healer.
Born in Richmond, Virginia, Wallace relocated to Nashville in 2008 and assembled the Naked Light, importing the distinctive sonic character and independent ethos of Richmond’s Spacebomb studio collective—the same environment that propelled the careers of Natalie Prass and Matthew E. White—into the city’s underground circuit. The ensemble issued its first full-length, I Smile All Day, I Smile All Night, in 2009, followed by More Strange News from Another Star in 2013.
Wallace adopted the Skyway Man alias four years later while preserving the Naked Light’s foundational folk-rock approach and layering in cosmic country, blues, and gospel textures. The 2017 album Seen Comin' from a Mighty Eye was tracked in Matthew E. White’s attic alongside Spacebomb’s house bassist Cameron Ralston and house drummer Pinson Chanselle, fully embracing Wallace’s metaphysical preoccupations with trickster mythology and the interplay between UFOlogy and religion. The 2020 follow-up World Only Ends When You Die pursued a comparable vision, expanding Wallace’s self-described “cosmological country and sci-fi gospel-blues” into a sweeping cinematic psych opera that traces a classic hero’s journey sparked by a near-death experience.
For 2023’s Flight of the Long Distance Healer, Wallace enlisted a roster of collaborators that included Erin Rae, Andy Cabic of Vetiver, Spencer Cullum, Kelly McFarling, and Sam Doores of The Deslondes. This latest concept piece merges the extraterrestrial ideologies and unconventional philosophies of its predecessor with passages of profound personal introspection, all propelled by a cosmic current of progressive blues-rock, swamp boogie, and future folk.
