Aoife Nessa Frances crafts haunting, occasionally experimental indie folk with touches of lightly psychedelic pop from her base in North Dublin, where her lush, dark-toned vocals and elegant arrangements give the music its dramatic weight. The Irish singer/songwriter issued her debut album, Land of No Junction, in January 2020, then followed it with the pastoral and ruminative Protector in late 2022.

Born in Dublin’s southern coastal area, Frances grew up in a large creative family that urged her toward music early on. A hand injury redirected her from flamenco guitar toward quieter folk and rock idioms, prompting her to start writing songs; she later joined Dublin’s thriving indie rock community as half of the shoegaze duo Princess alongside Liam Mesbur. The pair issued several singles and EPs that earned modest attention during the mid-2010s before parting ways. In subsequent years Frances concentrated on more acoustic, pastoral material, refining an elegant style that incorporated light psychedelic elements and lush strings through her partnership with Cian Nugent. She reemerged under her own name in 2019 after signing with the American indie imprint Ba Da Bing Records, which released her solo debut, Land of No Junction, early the next year.

With live performances halted by the global pandemic, Frances relocated to rural County Clare on Ireland’s west coast to begin composing her next record. The solitary conditions of writing and recording sparked an inner shift audible in the tranquil, mysterious atmosphere of Protector. Issued in late 2022 on the Partisan label, the album examines dislocation, family, and renewal.
