Biography
Tamino, a singer-songwriter from Belgium, achieved global recognition in the latter half of the 2010s through his fusion of somber, atmospheric indie rock with classical Arabic melodic inflections. Born and raised in Belgium to Egyptian and Lebanese parents, he channels his multifaceted heritage into his work, a distinctive approach that quickly drew admirers including Lana Del Rey, who brought him on tour, and Radiohead bassist Colin Greenwood, who contributed to Tamino’s first album, Amir, released in 2018. His second album, Sahar, arrived in 2022 and maintained the understated cinematic tone of the debut before culminating in a 2023 concert at the Great Pyramid of Giza. Now residing in New York, he tracked his third album, which was introduced by the 2024 single “Babylon.”
His complete name, Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad, references both Prince Tamino from Mozart’s The Magic Flute and the Arabic word for “prince”; he was born in Belgium in 1996. The grandson of Egyptian singer and movie-musical performer Muharram Fouad, who died in 2002, Tamino later discovered his grandfather’s antique resonator guitar at a relative’s home in Cairo and transported it to Antwerp for restoration and use. Although he initially played the instrument on tour, its fragility soon led him to leave it at home. At age 17 he pursued vocal training at the Amsterdam Royal Conservatory. His debut single, “Habibi,” surfaced in 2016, yet his career gained real traction after he won a talent contest staged by Dutch-language radio station Studio Brussel in 2017, prompting comparisons to “the Belgian Jeff Buckley” by year’s end.
Festival bookings followed, and after signing with U.K. independent Communion Music he issued the four-track Habibi EP in mid-2018. Communion released his debut album, Amir, that October; the record featured a collaboration with Colin Greenwood and contributions from the Nagham Zikrayat Orchestra. Tamino made his North American debut at the SXSW Festival in March 2019 and supported Lana Del Rey that June. A deluxe edition of Amir containing demos and live recordings appeared in October to mark the album’s first anniversary. That same year he also modeled for Vogue and for Missoni’s SS19 Collection alongside Gisele Bündchen, performing one of his songs during Paris Fashion Week.
After remaining out of sight for two years as the COVID-19 pandemic began, he resurfaced with the single “The First Disciple” in April 2022. Touring resumed that June, and Communion issued his second album, Sahar, in September. In the ensuing period he continued to tour, delivered a special concert at the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, and relocated to New York, where he worked with producer Eric Heigle (the War on Drugs, Arcade Fire) on his next record. The first single from that project, “Babylon,” emerged in 2024 and highlighted a richly textured arrangement built around the Arabic oud.
