Biography
Sofía Campos, an Argentine singer and songwriter, weaves her compositions from Argentinian foundations, a lifelong passion for Brazilian music acquired during her childhood there, and Mexican influences. She maintains homes in both Mexico and Los Angeles.
Playing instruments from an early age, she issued the refined four-song EP Rosa Laranja on her own, with Gustavo Guerrero handling production duties; the collection illustrated her fusion of bolero, cumbia, and nueva canción alongside jazzy Brazilian MPB, bossa, and samba. Her lyrics speak with candor and openness about love, heartbreak, nostalgia, wonder, and awe.
Guerrero also produced her first album, Salvar el Fuego. Its arrangements moved between spare accompaniment on guitar or piano and fuller ensemble explorations of bossa, son, corrido, nueva canción, samba, indie pop, and norteño. She maintained a demanding tour schedule throughout Latin America until the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted live performances.
Lugares Imaginarios arrived in 2021 as a breakthrough, produced by Matias Cella (Jorge Drexler) and displaying a richer, more nuanced pop sensibility that left her signature intact. Natalia LaFourcade joined her for the dreamy pop track “Verde Nocturno.” The album received favorable coverage in the U.S., Mexico, Rio, and Europe and earned Campos a nomination for Best New Artist at the 2022 Latin Grammy Awards.
She released the tender bossa single “Probema” in January 2023, then offered the advance track “Desastre” in June with a full rock band behind it. In August she delivered her third album, Lisboa, recorded in Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Los Angeles. Cella again produced the nine-song set, whose ethos mirrors that of a love letter. Sung in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, the songs trace the identities of sender and recipient while also conveying the songwriter’s sense of the bravery and vulnerability inherent in composing and sending such a message.
