Singer/songwriter Pedro Guerra started writing original material at age 14 and took up performing two years afterward. When he turned 18 he left Güímar for La Laguna, where he immediately immersed himself in the regional music community. Not long thereafter he contributed four compositions to a government-supported compilation and became a member of the collective Taller Canario. In 1993 he relocated to Madrid. After performing in intimate local spaces, his material attracted notice and was interpreted by established Spanish vocalists including Paloma San Basilio, Victor Manuel, and Ana Belén. In 1994 he received his first accolade when “Ondas” was selected as Spain’s song of the year. After issuing his debut live recording Golosinas, he tracked the studio album Tan Cerca de Mi in Paris and Madrid, releasing it in 1997. A significant accomplishment came when he created the score for Mararía, the feature directed by José Betancor. Recorded with the Canary Islands’ Philharmonic Orchestra, the soundtrack earned a nomination from the Spanish Academy of Cinematographic Sciences for Best Movie Soundtrack. Guerra’s album Raíz appeared in February 1999.
