Pablo Milanés stood alongside Silvio Rodriguez as a pivotal force in Cuba’s nueva trova popular song movement that arose in the late ’60s. With sponsorship from Fidel Castro’s government, the collective sought to reshape and modernize longstanding Cuban folk traditions for the country’s emerging post-revolutionary society. Renown came to Milanés through lyrics of striking poetic quality and a vocal approach that merged smoothness with deep feeling, placing him among the most admired Cuban musicians and songwriters of the late twentieth century via an extensive catalog of recordings. Controversy attached to him nevertheless: exiles condemned his steadfast loyalty to Castro, while others faulted his excursions into sentimental, orchestrated jazz-pop. Even so, his position as a central connection between traditional and contemporary Cuban music endured without serious challenge into the new millennium. Pablo Milanés died in Madrid, Spain on November 22, 2022 at the age of 79.
