Born to a music instructor and a vocalist who also played guitar, Violeta Parra felt her parents' impact from an early age. By nine years old, she had begun to sing and strum the guitar, quickly moving on to create pieces rooted in Chilean folk traditions. Her 1952 marriage to Luis Cereceda led the songwriter to embark on travels across the nation, absorbing the inherent beauty of her homeland that fueled much of her creative output. Violeta Parra relocated to Europe in 1954 and chose to make France her home, initiating recordings of her lyrical compositions there. Upon her 1958 homecoming to Chile, she turned to visual arts through painting and sculpture, thereby broadening her creative range further. The performer made her way back to Europe in 1961, performing alongside her children Isabel Parra and Angel Parra, the latter pair later ensuring the continuation of their mother's artistic heritage.
