Born in Mexico, Amparo Ochoa grew up in Costa Rica after her family relocated there in 1950. Her entry into music came in 1962, followed by a 1965 victory in a Sinaloa contest with the song “Hermosísimo Lucero.” She relocated to Mexico City in 1969 to study at the National Music School, continuing her work as an elementary teacher at the same time. One of her primary ambitions was realized when she took first place in La Hora del Aficionado (Amateur Time), a competition staged by a local radio station. Through songs addressing poverty along with indigenous and women’s rights, Amparo Ochoa expressed her deepest artistic convictions.
