Biography
With mastery of 19 instruments, Los Calchakis has extended the Spanish-Incan musical traditions of the Andes Mountains. Hector Miranda, serving as lyricist, vocalist, flutist, and percussionist, guides the Buenos Aires-based quintet, long counted among Argentina’s most acclaimed ensembles. The group earned a distinguished honor from the Academy Charles Cros in 1971 and interpreted the Mikis Theodorakis-penned score for Costa-Gravas’ film State of Seige. Although anchored in traditional forms, Los Calchakis devotes itself almost entirely to newly composed works, among them the well-known pieces “Eldorado,” “Mundo Nuevo,” “Hombre Libre,” and “Puerto de Palos.”
