Biography
Jaime Torres, an accomplished charango player born in Argentina, mastered the traditional Andean instrument—itself modeled on the Spanish vihuela—during childhood through instruction from Bolivian musician Mauro Nuñez. His debut release, Virtuosismo En Charango, appeared in 1964, with Charango arriving the following year and Aplausos Para Un Charango issued in 1967. That year also marked Jaime Torres’s first European tour, after which he relocated to the United States in 1970 for concerts in New York, Washington, and Los Angeles. In 1974 the artist and his ensemble performed at the opening ceremony of the global soccer championship staged in Germany. The next year Jaime Torres convened a meeting of regional instrumentalists, an activity he repeated with children in 1980. He later supplied the score for the Oscar-nominated film La Deuda Interna in 1988.
