Born in Cádiz, Spain, Ruibal finds creative stimulus in his affection for life and beautiful women, crafting verses of romance that have positioned him among the foremost vocalists to emerge from Andalusia. Raised in southern Spain, he has stayed rooted in Puerto de Santa Maria, a hub of flamenco and beautiful women. Rather than a conventional singer-songwriter, he is recognized as a poet-musician whose recordings reshape flamenco into a hybrid form, their refined yet melancholic character enriched by melodies arriving from North Africa. With longtime associate Tito Alcedo handling Spanish guitar, flamenco guitar, and Arabic lute, Ruibal merges the traditional musics of Spain and the Arab world while drawing additional strands from British and American pop, jazz, salsa, meringue, and other Latin idioms. His lyrics, meanwhile, reflect the imprint of Spanish poets Federico García Lorca and Rafael Alberti alongside the Beatles. Having begun writing songs in the late 1970s, he delivered his first international release, Sahara, on Riverboat Records in 2003. The album’s sleeve notes characterize it as ‘a digest, a primer, the bluffer’s guide to the untold and clandestine delights’ of Ruibal, drawing together material from Contrabando (1997) and Las Damas Primeras (2001) and reaffirming the charmer of Cádiz as a significant presence in Spanish music.
