Distinct from the Cuba-born architect who resides in the United States, Jorge Pardo ranks among flamenco’s most inventive instrumentalists. His relaxed, flowing phrasing on flute along with tenor and soprano saxophones has placed him at the forefront of the “new flamenco” movement. Long a mainstay of the Paco de Lucia Sextet, he has kept expanding the expressive range of his wind instruments through solo work. Although flamenco supplies the core of his style, he has forged an individual voice by blending jazz inflections with Caribbean and Afro-Cuban rhythms. The album 10 De Paco, made with Cadiz pianist Chano Dominguez, offered guitar-free reworkings of ten pieces by de Lucia.
