Dorantes

Born in Seville in 1969 into a distinguished flamenco lineage rich with storied performers, this pianist and composer, who has collected multiple awards, encountered the tradition’s foundations within his household while pursuing formal piano studies at the Real Conservatorio Superior de Música of Seville beginning in early childhood. These dual influences have driven his ongoing pursuit of a fusion between core flamenco elements and both classical and experimental currents. His initial major work, the widely recognized composition “Orobroy,” received its debut at the French Festival d’Art Flamenco de Mont de Marsan in 1996 before appearing at Seville’s Bienal de Flamenco, where it generated immediate excitement from listeners and reviewers. The piece later anchored his debut album, issued under the same title in 1998; that recording captured nearly every available honor and established Dorantes as the foremost instrumental flamenco voice of his era. In the years that followed, he sustained an intense calendar of global tours, festival appearances, theatrical productions, production and arrangement duties, and partnerships with fellow musicians, yet his discography has remained relatively modest in size even as each release is anticipated with great interest and met with strong acclaim. Sur, which probed orchestral possibilities, emerged in 2002, while his third album, the forward-looking Sin Muros!, did not arrive until 2012.
