Born in 1954 in Huelva, Spain, as Maria Isabel Quinones Gutierrez, jazz and flamenco artist Martirio first joined the ensemble Veneno alongside Kiko, Raimundo, and Rafael Amador. Her recording debut arrived with the 1986 album Estoy Mala, after which she accompanied the group on tours spanning Spain and France and later contributed to their 1989 follow-up Cristalitos Machacaos. While performing with Veneno she emerged as a cultural icon in modern Spain, becoming one of the decade’s most prominent Spanish figures.

Her third release, the 1991 album La Bola de la Vida del Amor, revealed an idiosyncratic blend of rock, jazz, pop, flamenco, blues, copla, and further styles; initially overlooked, the recording has since achieved classic status in Spanish pop. Martirio strengthened her reputation as a musical innovator with the 1994 album He Visto Color, the same year she stepped away from music to explore opportunities in film, television, and theater.

She resumed recording only in 1997 with her fifth album, Coplas de Madruga, recorded in partnership with Chano Domínguez. By reworking jazz standards in an authentic Spanish idiom the project reached a new audience, prompting a year of appearances at Spain’s leading jazz festivals and venues. Also in 1997 she met and collaborated with Cuban legend Compay Segundo, appearing on his album Lo Mejor de la Vida and joining him on a European tour.

In 1999, working with journalist Juan Cobos Wilkins, she issued her autobiography La Vuelta a Martirio en 40 Trajes. That same year she expanded her stylistic palette with Flor de Piel, which, together with 2001’s Mucho Corazon, celebrates her devotion to Latin music. Drawing on flamenco, cumbia, bossa nova, tango, and Cuban son, she found common ground with prominent Latin jazz artists including Jerry Gonzalez and Chano Domínguez.

Recent years have brought extensive international touring and countless guest appearances. The 2006 release Primavera en Nueva York showcases Martirio’s singular, elegant presence alongside New York’s finest Latin jazz musicians.
