A quartet made up entirely of women and devoted to a fresh strain of flamenco assembled in Barcelona around 2004, brought together by students enrolled at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC). Their distinctive approach to the music was shaped by the contrasting roots of its founding members: Silvia Pérez Cruz from Girona, steeped in fado and jazz; Marta Robles from Seville, trained in flamenco and classical guitar; Isabelle Laudenbach from Berlin, centered on flamenco guitar; and Lisa Bause from French Brittany, drawing on music hall and tango.

Although the ensemble appeared regularly at festivals over the following years, its first recording opportunity arrived only in 2010 with the album Las Reinas del Matute, which set poems by Federico García Lorca and Rafael Alberti beside traditional material and several original songs. The quartet’s irregular schedule arose largely from the competing demands on lead singer Cruz, who later stepped away to launch a solo career. Alba Carmona assumed the vocal role for the 2012 release Nosotras Somos.
