Biography
Solo Andata formed as an Australian electro-acoustic duo in 2006, when Kane Ikin and Paul Fiocco met while enrolled at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in Perth. Their experimental work draws extensively on field recordings, acoustic instruments, and electronic processing, resulting in pieces that range from haunting and suspenseful—incorporating the textures of buzzing insects, clattering bones, and tearing flesh to heighten an ominous, unsettling atmosphere—to calmer, more reflective passages that offset darker tones with warmth and light. The pair’s debut album, Fyris Swan, appeared on the Chicago-based Hefty Records label that same year. In 2007 they shared a bill at Melbourne’s Northcote Social Club with American electronic artist Taylor Deupree and fellow Australians Seaworthy; Deupree’s 12k imprint documented the concert in 2008, followed by the duo’s self-titled album on the same label in 2009. Desire Path Recordings issued Ritual in 2010, the year Solo Andata also performed in Japan alongside Deupree, Minamo, Sawako, and additional artists. 12k later compiled those Tokyo shows as Tasogare: Live in Tokyo in 2011. That same year Ikin began issuing solo recordings and gradually shifted toward an experimental techno approach distinct from the duo’s output, yet he and Fiocco maintained remote collaboration, culminating in the fourth Solo Andata album, In the Lens, which 12k released in 2016.
