Stanton Moore, a drummer steeped in the traditions of New Orleans, centers his career on Galactic, the hugely successful funk outfit, while maintaining an extensive schedule of club dates and studio sessions alongside numerous other artists. Immersed from childhood in the city’s vibrant musical community, he drew deeply from the styles of Professor Longhair, Zigaboo Modeliste of the Meters, and his teacher Johnny Vidacovich. In the early 1990s he connected with Galactic founders Robert Mercurio and Rich Vogel, participating in the band’s formative lineups Galactic Prophylactic and the Ivanhoes, where the musicians mastered a substantial share of the repertoire belonging to the Meters, the Crescent City’s pioneering funk ensemble.

Producer Dan Prothero included the group’s track “Black Eyed Pea” on the 1994 compilation Is That Jazz. The ensemble then cut Coolin’ Off for Fog City Records in 1996, with vocalist Theryl Declouet contributing both in the studio and later on tour. Extensive road work brought Moore into contact with Medeski, Martin & Wood keyboardist John Medeski, Karl Denson, and George Porter, Jr. of the Meters. He formed especially close musical bonds with eight-string guitarist Charlie Hunter, founder of T.J. Kirk, and saxophonist Skerik. This trio performed several live engagements and, in the weeks following Mardi Gras 1998, recorded Moore’s debut solo album All Kooked Out!, which also showcased New Orleans horn players Brent Rose, Brian Seeger, Matt Perrine, Ben Ellman, and former Sun Ra trumpeter Michael Ray.

After completing Galactic’s Crazyhorse Mongoose amid a packed touring calendar, Moore joined Hunter and Skerik for a string of fiery performances across the western United States. Numerous compositions of his appear regularly in Galactic’s sets. Around New Orleans he frequently assembled pickup groups under the name Moore & More, and he also performed with the New Orleans Klezmer All-Stars. His subsequent solo releases include Flyin’ the Koop (2001), III (2006), and Emphasis! On Parenthesis (2008). He maintained his role in Galactic, which issued the landmark Ya-Ka-May on Anti in February 2010, while delivering his own Groove Alchemy on the Telarc Jazz label that April.

Moore has long been sought after as a session drummer. He belongs to guitarist and songwriter Anders Osborne’s recording and touring ensemble whenever his calendar permits, appearing on the acclaimed American Patchwork (2010) and Black Eye Galaxy (2012). He also performed with Galactic and in additional contexts for the HBO series Treme. Returning to his jazz foundation, he recorded Conversations with pianist David Torkanowsky and bassist James Singleton; Royal Potato Family released the album in spring 2014.

While preparing fresh material with the same trio for a projected 2015 session, the musicians learned of Allen Toussaint’s death days before tracking was to begin. They set aside their original project and instead chose and arranged selections from Toussaint’s vast catalog, enlisting Donald Harrison, Jr., Cyril Neville, Trombone Shorty, Nicholas Payton, Skerik, Jolynda Kiki Chapman, Maceo Parker, and actor/musician Wendell Pierce. The resulting tribute, With You in Mind: The Songs of Allen Toussaint, appeared on Cool Green Recordings in July 2017.
