Stephen Duffy might easily have been remembered as the Pete Best of the 1980s, having exited Duran Duran just before the Birmingham group achieved global visibility through MTV. Yet he succeeded in building a distinct following, issuing a steady stream of recordings that traversed multiple strains of pop. In 1978 he joined forces with John Taylor on guitar and Nick Rhodes on keyboards to launch Duran Duran in their hometown, taking on vocal and bass duties himself. The following year he stepped away to pursue independent work. As Duran Duran ascended the British and American charts, Duffy concentrated on songwriting. By 1982 he had assembled the project Tin Tin, whose debut single “Kiss Me” reached only number 155 in the U.K. In the United States, however, the track gained traction in clubs and on alternative playlists. His first full-length release, The Ups and Downs, appeared on Virgin 10 Records in 1984. Early material often echoed the atmospheric synth-pop associated with Soft Cell, yet in 1987 he turned toward British folk rock and jangle pop while helping establish the Lilac Time. The group secured an American deal with Mercury Records the next year and issued its self-titled debut album, which found favor on college radio. Several further records followed before the band dissolved in 1991. Duffy returned to solo work with the 1998 album I Love My Friends and, a year later, reunited with the Lilac Time for Looking for the Day in Night.
