Steve Smith served as the drummer for Journey throughout the height of their commercial dominance from the late 1970s into the early 1980s, while also lending his skills to numerous other performers across multiple genres. Born August 21, 1954, in Brockton, Massachusetts, he first picked up drumsticks at age nine under the guidance of esteemed big-band instructor Bill Flanagan. From there he immersed himself in swing, R&B, hard rock, fusion, and big-band settings before enrolling at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

In October 1976 he joined jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty’s touring ensemble and contributed to the recording of Enigmatic Ocean (1977). A short stint with Ronnie Montrose’s band followed in 1978, after which he accepted an invitation to join Journey just as the group pivoted from its fusion roots toward arena rock. Smith’s versatile approach proved ideal; he anchored the drum chair on Evolution (1979), Departure (1980), Escape (1981), and Frontiers (1983), helping propel Journey to status as one of America’s most successful rock acts.

At the zenith of that success, vocalist Steve Perry dismissed him in favor of a purportedly more “soulful” direction. Smith promptly redirected his energies toward Vital Information, the ensemble he had formed in 1983 while still with Journey. The group released a steady stream of recordings through the 1980s, among them the standout titles Global Beat and Live Around the World: Where We Come from Tour 1998-1999. Between 1986 and 1993 he also performed with the all-star jazz-rock collective Steps Ahead.

When Journey reunited in the late 1990s after a hiatus that began in 1987, Smith participated in the sessions for Trial by Fire (1996) and prepared for an ensuing world tour; the outing was canceled, however, when Perry learned he suffered from a degenerative hip condition. Beyond his work with Journey and Vital Information, Smith has recorded or toured with Steps Ahead, Randy Brecker, Allan Holdsworth, Frank Gambale, Stanley Clarke, Mariah Carey, Ahmad Jamal, Stuart Hamm, Tony MacAlpine, Dweezil Zappa, Y&T, and many additional artists. He has conducted drumming clinics worldwide for decades, released an instructional video in 1987, and earned the distinction of “Number One All-Around Drummer” in Modern Drummer Magazine’s readers’ poll each year from 1987 through 1991. In 2001 the same publication named him one of the Top 25 Drummers of All Time, and the following year inducted him into its Hall of Fame.

Vital Information’s notable later releases include Vitalive! (1991), Easier Done Than Said (1992), Ray of Hope (1996), Show ’Em Where You Live (2002), and Come on In (2004).
