During Rick James's peak Motown era, the musicians supporting him onstage and in the studio—Kenny Hawkins, Tom McDermott, Levi Ruffin, Jr., Daniel LeMelle, Jerry Livingston, Jerry Rainer, and Nat Hughes—cut multiple tracks for the Gordy label in the early '80s at James's behest. Those releases met with little commercial response.
