Blending the smoother aspects of jazz with the high-energy drive of drum'n'bass, David Stewart and Roy Bleau created Subject 13. The pair, who grew up in London's Hackney, had played football together since their teenage years. Stewart left college to start DJing, concentrating mainly on hip-hop and soul, and by 1990 he was producing hardcore tracks under the name Eternity. He later reconnected with Bleau, after which the two released singles on Fabio's Creative Source Records, Basement, and L.T.J Bukem's Good Looking. Subject 13 appeared on Bukem's 1996 compilation Earth, Vol. 1 and issued their debut album, The Black Steele Project, in late 1997 on Crammed Discs. Stewart and Bleau also receive respect for the Sub Bass club-nights, which target the younger crowd, and for their label Vibe'z Recordings, many of whose tracks feature on the compilation Subject 13 Presents Vibe'z Recordings.
