Biography
Forming the indie-pop duo Sukpatch out of Minneapolis were two small-town Southerners, Chris Heidman and Stephen Cruze, whose work blended lo-fi pop with samples and hip-hop beats in an original way. In the early '90s, the two started making tracks using inexpensive gear in their residence and shared the resulting cassettes among acquaintances. Before long, Slabco, an indie label from Seattle, put out their material, which encompassed the album Haulin' Ass and Smokin' Grass from 1996, the EP Honky Tonk Operation released in 1997, and a number of 7" singles. Attention from Grand Royal, the label associated with the Beastie Boys, led to a 1998 signing, after which they put forth the EP Tie Down That Shiny Wave in 1999, featuring somewhat more involved production.
