Under the name Sun Electric, the German pair Max Loderbauer, son of a composer, and studio engineer Tom Thiel fuse high-velocity Teutonic trance textures with relaxed ambient atmospheres. Their paths first crossed at the facility where Thiel was employed, after which both musicians performed together in Fisherman's Friend. Thomas Fehlmann, a regular collaborator with the Orb, urged them to relocate to his hometown of Berlin and launch a project; the pair accepted the suggestion. Once their opening single “O Locco” surfaced, Orb member Alex Paterson licensed it for his Wau! Mr. Modo imprint. The duo next entered a deal with ZTT, whose executives pressed for an electro-pop direction. After extricating themselves from that agreement, Sun Electric joined the Apollo subsidiary of R&S and issued the 1995 debut album Kitchen. A live recording captured at Berlin’s Love Parade followed the next year, and Via Nostra arrived in 1998.
