Annbjørg Lien may rank as the Norwegian fiddler most familiar beyond Scandinavian shores, yet devotees of authentic folk traditions tend to favor Sven Nyhus instead. Together with Hans Brimi, Nyhus exemplified a familiar Scandinavian archetype: the austere fiddler delivering dance repertoire, occasionally supported solely by the steady pulse of his own foot.

Nyhus entered the world in 1932 in Norway’s Østerdalen region. Although the flatfele, or ordinary violin, prevails throughout that area, he occasionally turned to the Hardanger fiddle, the country’s signature variant resembling a Baroque viola d’amore and fitted with four additional sympathetic strings beneath the primary set. His keen ear and rare skill at transcribing melodies—particularly challenging given that Norwegian folk music deviates from standard Western intervals—established him among Scandinavia’s foremost collectors of traditional material. He also ranked among the nation’s most popular practitioners, performing for years with a longstanding dance ensemble.

Only a single album, Traditional Norwegian Fiddle Music, reached American listeners when Shanachie issued it in 1991; several further recordings appeared across Scandinavia. The U.S. release featured Nyhus unaccompanied, whereas the Scandinavian discs typically presented him within quartets, quintets, or sextets. In 2000 he accepted an honorary Spellemannprisen, Norway’s equivalent of the Grammy, and two years later received the title of Commander of the Order of St. Olav. Nyhus passed away on May 20, 2023, a single day before turning ninety-one.
