Swan Lake emerged in 2005 as an indie rock supergroup drawing from Destroyer, the New Pornographers, Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes, and Wolf Parade, centered on the contributions of Dan Bejar, Spencer Krug, and Carey Mercer. The project represented the culmination of prior joint efforts among the three musicians. Over several years, Krug, a Wolf Parade member, collaborated intermittently with Mercer's Frog Eyes, and the pair had shared living quarters in the past. Bejar enlisted Frog Eyes to back him on Destroyer's 2005 masterpiece Your Blues. The musicians also produced fresh renditions of tracks from Your Blues under the title Notorious Lightning and Other Works. Prior to the year's end in 2005, they abandoned their interim moniker, the Songwriters Project, in favor of Swan Lake. Jagjaguwar issued their self-produced first full-length, Beast Moans, during November 2006. A second album, Enemy Mine, appeared in 2009 and reflected greater teamwork in the composition process.
