A seasoned rapper and producer from Detroit’s underground hip-hop circuit, Ta’Raach—also known as Lacks—devoted extensive effort throughout the 1990s and the first years of the following decade to creating and appearing on numerous recordings that later became scarce collector items owing to local industry obstacles. Although born in Erie, Pennsylvania, as Terrell McMathis, he spent his formative years on the city’s west side alongside neo-soul singer Dwele and fellow MC Big Tone. Unable to purchase extensive record libraries, he borrowed music from neighborhood sources. After relocating to Lansing, Michigan, McMathis enrolled in classes at Michigan State University in 1996, where he connected with the campus radio station and adopted the alias Lacksi-Daisy-Cal. He soon became a central figure in the local scene by organizing freestyle events at a neighborhood café. Motivated by that involvement, he returned to Detroit, yet plans to issue an album alongside Big Tone were repeatedly blocked.

In 1999 his situation improved after an introduction to entrepreneur RJ Rice and Detroit techno figure Carl Craig, who supplied the aspiring producer with his first MPC and SP-1200 samplers; McMathis mastered the machines rapidly. He absorbed considerable knowledge from Craig while touring Europe as part of the Innerzone Orchestra, an experience shaped by Craig’s distinctive fusion of jazz, hip-hop, and techno that subsequently guided his own approach. Upon returning, McMathis helped establish the Breakfast Club, a Detroit-based collective supporting emerging local talent that also counted Big Tone, Dwele, and MC Elzhi—later a member of Slum Village—among its participants. Like earlier projects, the group’s recordings never reached the public.

Faced with stalled prospects and unfulfilled commitments, McMathis relocated to Atlanta. There he adopted the name Lacks, launched Earth Angel Records, and issued the 2003 mixtape Re: Lacks, Vol. 1: With the World, which compiled previously unreleased material. By this time he had formed a close association with pioneering Detroit producer Jay Dee—whom he had met during the period he encountered Craig and Rice—contributing vocals to the solo release Welcome 2 Detroit, and he had also begun working with fellow Detroit artist Waajeed. In 2004 McMathis settled in Pasadena, California, to position himself nearer to Los Angeles, where further opportunities arose. Over the next two years he focused on completing his debut solo album, The Fevers, which appeared in early 2007 under the Ta’Raach name.
