Biography
Tewodros Kassahun, who records as Teddy Afro, has earned recognition as a leading Ethiopian pop artist whose songs frequently combine uplift with pointed political commentary. Born in Addis Ababa in 1976, he entered the music scene in 2001 through the album Abugida and rapidly became a significant presence in Ethiopia. His work fuses reggae, local Ethiopian traditions, and pop, and the 2005 follow-up Yastesereyal contained a contentious title track that condemned official corruption and rose to prominence as a major hit. Broadcast outlets subsequently blocked four songs from the album, yet Yastesereyal maintained robust sales and cultural reach. The next year he issued a re-release of the earlier collection Tarik Tesera, whose motivational title song paid tribute to two Ethiopian runners and gained broad familiarity. In 2007, while his popularity was at its height, Afro was involved in a car accident that killed a young homeless man; he faced charges of hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter, served two years in prison, and the sentence drew widespread criticism as retribution from a hostile government. After his release in 2009 he staged a return concert at Addis Ababa Stadium before a crowd of 60,000. His fourth album, the historically themed Tikur Sew, appeared in 2012 and honored Ethiopia’s stand at the battle of Adwa that preserved the country’s independence from Italy. The record enjoyed strong success domestically and expanded his audience overseas. Following extensive international touring and prominent appearances, the 2017 release Ethiopia received critical acclaim and opened at number one on Billboard’s World Music chart.
