Tejendra Narayan Majumdar has issued an outstanding catalog of recordings since he first appeared in the early 1980s among a fresh wave of Indian classical artists. He has since established himself as a leading sarod exponent within that tradition. Like numerous peers, he began lessons at a very young age, turning first to his grandfather and later to his father once the elder musician grew exhausted. The most decisive tutelage began when he joined the studio of Ustad Bahadur Khan, nephew of the revered Alauddin Khan; those eighteen years of study yielded first prize in the 1981 All India Radio competition and a presidential gold medal. After Ustad Bahadur Khan’s death in 1989, Majumdar trained with Ajay Sinha Roy before being accepted as a disciple by the eminent Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, with whom he maintains an ongoing association. His programs interweave selections from the dhrupad, tantrakari, and gayaki idioms, and he has appeared at leading concert halls while touring the United States, Canada, and Europe. His New York debut occurred in 1994 when he shared a New School program with sitarist Manilal Nag. Among the distinguished tabla players who have accompanied him are Pandit Kishan Maharah, Sankar Ghosh, Pandit Swqapan Chaudbury, Anindo Chatterjee, and Ustad Zakir Hussain. Reviewers consistently praise his recitals, likening them at times to the work of Beethoven.
