Shivkumar Sharma ranked among the foremost visionaries within the realm of Hindustani classical music. His widespread appeal created a persistent challenge for devoted listeners. Because his achievements generated strong interest in his discography, any label that issued a Shivkumar Sharma album gained immediate credibility. As a result, his recordings appeared in overwhelming numbers. His performances remained consistently masterful, seldom falling beneath a high standard, which complicated efforts to compile a concise selection of essential works.

Sharma’s path reflected unwavering commitment. Born in Jammu Kashmir during January 1938, he received a direct request from his father, Uma Dutt Sharma, to advance the Kashmiri santoor. As an obedient son he complied, continuing despite his own initial doubts. Although the santur, its Persian counterpart, carried established ties to Persian and Iranian classical traditions, attempts to bring the Indian instrument onto the classical concert stage were widely dismissed as misguided among traditionalists. Shivkumar Sharma nevertheless continued, testing modifications, altering its strings, and adjusting its structure. His debut major santoor recital occurred in Bombay in February 1955, yet only in the 1970s did he quiet “the die-hard connoisseurs of the music, musicologists and purists.” While refining the santoor he also performed on tabla, supporting artists that ranged from the renowned Punjabi folksinger Surinder Kaur to sitar maestro Ravi Shankar; this experience with tabla technique and rhythmic structure profoundly enriched both his interpretive approach and his presentation on stage. Shivkumar Sharma died from cardiac arrest at a hospital in Mumbai on May 10, 2022, at the age of 84.
