Sultan Khan's sarangi playing stood out for its emotional depth, technical mastery, and melodic focus. His father, Ustad Gulab Khan, provided his initial instruction on the instrument, after which the musician kept refining his craft. At age eleven he gave his first public recital during the All-Indian Conferences, later earning the Sangeet Natya Academy Award on two occasions. He also collected the gold medal from Moharashtra and received an American Academy of Artists award in 1998. International notice followed his 1974 role supporting Ravi Shankar on George Harrison's Dark Horse tour, and he later appeared on the soundtracks of Gandhi and In Custody. In 1997 he performed at Prince Charles' 50th birthday celebration. Sultan Khan died in 2011.
