Thandiswa Mazwai positioned herself at the vanguard of transformation from her earliest days. Born in the rural homeland of Transkei, she spent her childhood in Soweto throughout the 1980s as a member of the Soweto generation, who witnessed apartheid's violent collapse and the emergence of a free South Africa. The daughter of journalists, she grew up immersed in banned books, writing, and political discourse, influences that later shaped her songwriting and political awareness.

After completing a B.A. in international relations and English, she drew on her church and school choir background to launch her professional career in 1993, appearing at the Market Theatre in the production SA Love. Soon afterward she contributed backing vocals to the soon-to-be-innovative group Bongo Maffin, accepted an invitation to become their lead singer in 1997, and thereby initiated far-reaching shifts in South African music.

Celebrated as the sound of "new South Africa," Bongo Maffin ranked among the first groups to present kwaito, an exclusively South African fusion of hip-hop, reggae, and house music colored by local sensibilities and dialects. Thandiswa's politically conscious lyrics and rich, expressive vocals set the trio apart, helping them become South Africa's most popular act, release five albums, and perform across the globe.

In 2004, marking the tenth anniversary of South African freedom, Thandiswa again moved to the forefront of change. While remaining a member of Bongo Maffin, she issued her solo album Zabalaza. This striking collection of soulful, genre-bending songs portrayed a contemporary African identity. Returning to her rural birthplace, she blended the traditional harmonies of Xhosa chants and instruments with modern kwaito, gospel, and jazz sounds. The album resonated throughout Africa, Europe, and Japan, securing a series of honors that included the 2004 Kora award for Best Female Artist as well as the 2005 SA Music Awards for Best African Contemporary Album and Best Female Artist.

Hailed as the new generation's Miriam Makeba, Thandiswa signed with an American label in late 2004 and intends to tour both independently and with Bongo Maffin in support of their forthcoming album.
