The Bachelors emerged in the 1960s as an Irish pop group comprising brothers Conleth, born November 18, 1935, and Declan Cluskey, born December 12, 1942, alongside John Stokes, born August 13, 1940. Initially an instrumental ensemble specializing in harmonicas under the names Harmonichords or Harmony Chords from 1958 onward, they pivoted to vocal work after touring England in 1959. Securing a contract with Decca Records in the U.K. prompted a name change in 1962, after which they notched their debut success via the 1963 single “Charmaine,” which reached number six. Their most prominent release, “Diane,” attained the top position in England and number ten in America during 1964; further chart entries followed through 1967, and the original lineup sustained cabaret performances until an acrimonious parting between Stokes and the Cluskeys in 1984. Conleth “Con” Clusky died on April 8, 2022 at the age of 86.
